Epithalon

Epithalon (also written Epitalon or Epithalone) is a synthetic tetrapeptide, Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, abbreviated AEDG. Four standard L-amino acids, no glycosylation, no D-stereochemistry, no backbone modification.

It was synthesised in Vladimir Khavinson's programme at the St Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology, modelled on the amino acid composition of Epithalamin, a bovine pineal extract. The AEDG sequence was later identified within the pineal peptide complex itself.

The two acidic side chains, glutamic acid at position 2 and aspartic acid at position 3, give the molecule a low isoelectric point and strong aqueous solubility, which makes stock solution preparation straightforward.

Epithalon has been studied in vitro and in animal models in the context of telomerase activity, telomere length, circadian gene expression and pineal signalling. Much of the published work originates from the group that developed it, with limited independent replication, and the extent to which in vitro findings translate to living tissue has not been established. We carry it because the analytical characterisation is clean, not because the biology is settled.
